POSITION INFORMATION
Coos Bay School District is looking for Robotics Coaches for FIRST Tech Challenge teams that will participate in competitions run by the Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program. Teams are composed of 7th- 12th grade students. A background in science (mechanics), engineering, programming, and problem solving is preferred.

- Can work with mentors and parents.
- Able to instruct/supervise students in the safe use of tools (screwdriver, hacksaw, drill).
- Experience with Android OS, including app installation and device settings is a plus.
- Experience with Scratch or Java programming is a plus.
- Experience with a FIRST program is a plus.
- Coaching experience preferred.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recruit for and maintain a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team that will participate in FIRST (www.firstinspires.org) competitions sponsored by ORTOP (www.ortop.org).
- Ensure all eligible students, their families, and their teachers know about the opportunity to try-out for and participate in FTC.
- Recruit equitably using Remind, flyers, summer workshops, or other methods.
- Maintain a roster of 15 team members with a list of alternates.
- Manage student and parent expectations.
- Make sure parents understand the rigor of the program and are committed to having their child attend and participate.
- Design a simple “Intent to Participate” form that lists student responsibilities, practice dates, and competition dates. Have these forms signed by each team member and their parents.
- Ensure that students understand and are willing to demonstrate the FIRST philosophy of Gracious Professionalism.
- Meet FIRST and ORTOP team requirements.
- Register team(s) with FIRST and ORTOP.
- Register coaches and students with FIRST.
- Assist parents with online registration of their students.
- Submit invoices for registration, league, and tournament fees.
- Follow all FIRST and ORTOP guidelines and safety requirements.
- Meet district team requirements.
- Create an electronic roster of team members, including necessary health information, emergency phone numbers, and adults responsible for transporting students home after practice.
- Have a plan for contacting the building administrator/custodian in an emergency.
- Keep building colleagues, parents, and students informed with a team bulletin board or electronic newsletter.
- Plan team meetings.
- Hold two 90-minute practices every week of the season.
- Coordinate practice schedules with the building administrator and custodian.
- Provide continuous supervision and ensure personal behavior and program reputation align with Coos Bay School District Standards.
- Secure and inventory equipment when not in use.
- Submit anticipated equipment and budget requirements for the next season.
- If a team qualifies for post-season competition, complete all necessary registrations, payment invoices, travel requests and accommodation reservations.
- Additional requirements.
- Work with students to build confidence, teamwork, and good learning habits.
- Be familiar with the requirements for FIRST Tech Challenge team awards and encourage teams to strive for a particular award each season.
- Ensure teams maintain up-to-date Engineering Notebooks documenting their membership, team decisions, robot designs, and game strategies.
- Promote program growth via outreach efforts.
SALARY
$ 1406- $3655 depending on experience
- Must meet state requirements for COVID 19 vaccination or an exception to the COVID 19 vaccination as a condition of employment.
