Mentor Teacher

Qualifications:
- A bargaining unit member, who has a minimum 3 years experience (5 years preferred) in teaching at the level/subject matter of the new teacher.
- Experience in comprehensive, supplemental, and intervention programs are desired.
- Must be highly knowledgeable about research-based programs, principals of effective instruction, differentiation, targeted interventions, instructional strategies, and use of common formative assessments.
- Must have effective communication and classroom management skills.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as instructional leader to provide support, and direct and explicit feedback to new teachers about educational practice, instructional strategies, and formative assessments.
- Model PLC participation, new teaching strategies and observe instruction.
- Meet regularly with classroom teacher, instructional coaches, and others to collaborate, talk about student instructional needs, and plan for instruction based on progress monitoring outcomes.
- Facilitate the selection and oversee the implementation of the differentiation, comprehensive, supplemental and intervention programs.
- Provide advice and strategies to promote a healthy balance in the new educator’s life.
- Serve as expert in the assessment/data system, and work with teachers on data interpretation and making appropriate instructional decisions based on data.
- Participate in professional development in preparation to fulfill all duties and responsibilities.
- Mentors must go through District approved training prior to serving as a mentor and a two-hour CBEA training in addition to District training. (These trainings may be jointly developed and held together if the parties so choose.)
Exclusions:
- Mentor teachers will not be assigned to directly provide instruction to children on an ongoing or substitute basis;
- be designated to clerical tasks;
- play a part in the evaluation of other licensed staff; or
- have other responsibilities that take time from their instructional leadership roles.
